Meet our Regina surgeons...
Dr. Malcolm Banks
Dr. Malcolm Banks was a specialist in Ophthalmology with the Royal Air Force before moving to Canada in 1980. He trained at Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge, England and St. John's Ophthalmic Hospital in Jerusalem. He is a member of the Canadian Ophthalmological Society.
Malcolm has been performing eye surgery since 1972 and laser refractive surgery since 1997. His wife, youngest daughter and son have all had laser refractive surgery at Horizon.
Malcolm is an enthusiastic golfer, plays and coaches squash and breeds registered quarter horses. His most recent publication can be found in the Canadian Journal of Continuing Medical Education, May 2002.
He and his family have lived and worked in Swift Current since 1980.
Dr. Jeffrey Judelson
Dr. Jeffrey Judelson trained in South Africa at the University of the Witwatersrand and St. John's Eye Hospital, and has been in practice in Regina since 1988. He holds Fellowships from the College of Surgeons of South Africa, the Royal Colleges of Surgeons of Edinburgh and Canada. He has a particular interest in cataract, corneal and refractive surgery and has been performing refractive surgery since 1994. Dr. Judelson has presented papers on corneal surgery at meetings in South Africa, Boston and San Diego. He is a member of the Canadian Ophthalmology Society, Canadian Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons and of the Lions Eye Bank of Saskatchewan. He has run the corneal transplant program in Regina since 1989.
When not working, Dr. Judelson is an avid golfer and squash player, and is currently President of Saskatchewan Squash Association.
Dr. Renatta Varma
Dr. Renatta Varma graduated from medical school in 1998 with Great Distinction. She completed her residency in ophthalmology at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, and holds a fellowship from The Royal College of Physicians of Canada. She then completed a subspecialty felowship in vitreo-retinal surgery in New Orleans, Louisiana under Dr. Gholam Peyman, who holds the patent for LASIK surgery. She completed a second fellowship in vitreo-retinal surgery in Victoria, BC, and joined Horizon Laser Vision Center in 2005. She has presented papers at meetings throughout North America and in Singapore. She is a member of the Canadian Ophthalmological Society, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons. She practices in Regina, with a special interest in retinal, cataract and refractive surgery.
Her other interests include music, travelling, and home renovations.
